Living With Diabetes - Foods to Avoid

Diabetes is a chronic disease that is characterized by increased levels of blood sugar (glucose). Glucose is a sugar that comes from the digestion of the food that we eat; it circulates the blood and is used by the body for energy. The causes of diabetes are considered as a disorder in the production or function of insulin, or a hormone made by the pancreas, which functions as a key facilitating the passage of glucose from the blood to organs and tissues.

There are several types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes produces no insulin, so the body does not have the key that will open the door of sugars to tissues. Usually, it begins before 30 ages. So for controlling it, have an appropriate plan of food and insulin injections. Type 2: this diabetes is the most common form. It usually begins after the age of 40, the disease is seen in increasingly frequent in young and adolescent form. This type of diabetes is usually a result of overweight, obesity, poor diet and physical inactivity.

How can you prevent diabetes?

• Increase consumption of fruits and vegetables
• Avoid foods high in sodium (meats, sausages, dressings, snack products, cheeses, etc.)
• Cook without adding salt. Replace parsley, basil, thyme, rosemary and other spices
• Perform 6 daily meals: 4 main and 2 snacks
• Consume red or white (chicken or fish) no more than 5 times per week meat
• Take care of the body and prevent overweight.
• Add at least 30 minutes of physical activity continuously like using stairs, walking, dancing, etc.
• And most importantly, do not smoke. Even a few cigarettes a day are very harmful, especially for people with diabetes.

People with diabetes are at greater risk for high cholesterol, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. The prevention and control of these factors are a fundamental aspect of treatment of this disease. So if you have features and causes of diabetes, remind your doctor:

• Weigh, measure and take the pressure.
• Examine your feet.
• Calculate your overall cardiovascular risk at least once a year
• Control with eye doctor and dentist.
